Blood Diamond

Post by AngelBaby » 19 Dec 2006 12:23

Okay, despite the fact that he was in Titanic, I must admit I think Leo has become one of our country's best actors. This is the second role this year for which he very rightly could be nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award.

He was excellent in this moving film from one of the more underappreciated directors working today, Edward Zwick (Glory, The Last Samurai). Jennifer Connelly was also good, and don't be surprised if Djimon Hounsou gets a Best Supporting Actor nod come Oscar nomination time.

By the end of the movie, I was seriously questioning whether I ever wanted to receive a diamond ring when I get engaged.

By the next morning, I was pretty much over it though. :P

Running in the circles I do, I've come to have a low opinion of De Beers.

I'm not going to get proscriptive, though. That's irritating: I hate preachy vegatarians.

But,

Random facts (I think, feel free to check):

Canada is the third largest producer of diamonds in the world.

Canada is not even close to Africa.

and, separately

The quality of synthetic diamonds is progressing nicely.

No need to just eschew diamonds, although I have a couple of friends who wouldn't ever accept an engagement ring with a diamond on it.

Anyhoo, I don't feel like seeing this movie, I think I get the moral already.

And otherwise I'm sure it will just make me sad.

It had a good ending. I almost cried like an Angelbaby.

Did your head swell up to 3x normal size too? :halo:

I might see it this weekend... but my friend Matt wants to see it too, and he will be out of town for over a week. I hate being forced to wait to see things until other people are able to see them with me.

I'm sure smash knows what I mean. :x

Sadly I do. Stupid friends. I still didn't watch this week's BSG because I don't know if Brandumb watched it on his own or not.

DiCraprio did a great job in BloodDiamond. Very convincing as a white South Africian (technically he was from Zimbabwae but whatever). Jennifer Connelly is as gorgeous as ever. Goddamn is she beautiful.

To Seriously's concern, I think it did a fantastic job of mixing story with political message. It's a fine line, it could easily cross over into cheesey or preachy and it didn't overdo either.

I thought Leo's accent was shit. He slipped back into Yankdrawl at certain key moments in the dialogue. Usually it wouldnt bother me but it brought me out of the reality of the moment when his dialogue slipped. I think his acting is great. But his physicality really doesn't lend him any favours when he's trying to pull off the parts of say, an undercover cop or a diamond smuggling ex-merc.

That being said, Blood Diamond was a really well shot film that perhaps could have used a better ending plot. It was good story with an over-melodramatic ending bit. But since it's Edward Zwick I kinda expected it.

And Jennifer Connelly, she was just coasting by in the movie with her looks.

Djimon - he should be the one nominated.

His accent was 100% dead on.

Just an FYI. I've been all over southern Africa.

Honestly I never noticed a bad accent. But I was engrossed in the story and could have missed it.

I agree.

...However, it was a bit predictable. I still thought it was a good movie - but not until the final hour or so.

I don't Djimon Honsou will get a nomination for Blood Diamond as his people are throwing all their weight behind his performance in Eragon.

The only thing I liked about this movie was Leonardo's kaffir-accent...
Hilarious!
